Description

This is an introductory course for the volunteers of the educational and activist NGO The Avalon Project - Initiative for a Culture of Peace. With your admission to Avalon you will be part of a broad learning community in which you will not only discover another perspective through which to see the world, but you will also work on it to achieve the social change that will lead us to a more just, peaceful and sustainable society. Thus, this online course will provide your first steps in this adventure, and will explain you how to be integral part of this learning community that the people of Avalon are.

Course metrics

  • Notional learning hours: Between 17 and 19 hours
  • Duration: Depending on your availability. Maximum, 5 weeks (between 2h 30' and 4h 15' per week)
  • Level: Adult education. (Welcome everyone from the age of 16.)

What's it about?

This course is a first contact with the educational non-governmental organisation and activist The Avalon Project - Initiative for a Culture of Peace. Through this course you will know what it is, where it comes from, what it does and how our organisation is structured, and you will discover the principles and values on which it is based, as well as its fundamentals of thought, ethics and action.

What will I learn?

In this course:

  • You will know what The Avalon Project is, where it comes from, what we do and how we organise ourselves
  • You will discover what our organisation is based on, for which we will introduce you to the Earth Charter, Deep Ecology, Ethics of Care and Deep Activism
  • You will know what our educational programme for peace and sustainability is, and we will open the doors to our great global projects: The Earth Stories Collection, a global bank of myths, legends and traditional stories capable of bringing humanity to a systemic and ecocentric worldview, and The Earth Story Tellers, a global network of storytelling activists
  • You will make contact with the community of people who compose Avalon and begin to integrate yourself into our activities

What's involved?

Although the course is designed so that each person can do it on their own, without the need of other students, that will not prevent you from interacting with other Avalon volunteers through our communication networks. In this way, you can gradually integrate yourself into the great learning community which is Avalon. Our group is made up of people of different nationalities, beliefs, ages, abilities and qualifications, although all are interested in better understanding the world in which we live and all want to do something to build a more just, peaceful and sustainable society.

This course will mean, in the worst case, depending on your availability, a few hours a week. In return, you will be offered introductory knowledge about different areas that may be of great interest to anyone concerned with social and economic justice, sustainability, respect for the planet and non-violent conflict resolution. On the other hand, you will learn to develop yourself in an online course where you can deepen your knowledge as much as you want, and where you can ask for guidance within the communication networks of our organisation.

What prerequisites would I have, if any?

Anyone over 16 is free to participate in this course and become part of Avalon. Of course, you will also need an Internet connection and basic web browsing skills, along with the capabilities to create a Logbook of Your Life in Avalon (a blog) and a couple of accounts on social networks (if this is difficult for you, in the same course we offer you tutorials for the study and management of these accounts and blog).

Fees

Only €5.

Keep in mind that a course like this would be worth, at least, € 50. In fact, at Thinkific, they advise not to offer any course of the duration of this one for less than that € 50. On the other hand, the price would go up even more if you take into account the curriculum of our instructor, Grian A. Cutanda. However, we understand that your intention is to be part of Avalon volunteering, so we cannot ask you to pay the true price of this course. Even if you can't even pay € 5 and you are a volunteer, please contact us and we will see how you can do it. To do this, get in touch with [email protected]
